Dear Miki,

I got married at the age of 16, and I thought that my husband loved me; instead he cheated on me after only being married one week. He also continued doing this for a long time. For survival reasons I stayed with him for 32 years, then I left him. Now after 11 years of separation for some reason we got back together, but I am not happy because there is no love in our relationship. Do you see any changes ever?

It seems that this marriage never had any solid foundation or love behind it when you were 16 and initially got married, or even now after 11 years of being apart. You did the right thing for yourself when you left, and you should have continued to move forward and build yourself a new life. The mistake I see you making is that you continued to stay in contact with your ex and he was able to convince you at a time when you had no one else, that you would be better off returning to him. This is a relationship of convenience for him, and one of only more disappointment for you. You will never find the love that you have been seeking all your life with him. Its time to move on again.

Dear Miki
I recently was able to reconnect with an old flame. We chatted on the phone as well exchanged e-mails. We cleared up a lot of hard feelings from 20 years ago. Even though I am happily married now, my love for this man never dimmed. I am not even thinking of leaving my husband, and in fact, my husband is aware of my talking with this man, and is ok with it. My old flame and I had another disagreement, and he now will not respond to me at all! My heart is breaking all over again! Do you see us ever talking again?

You are really fooling yourself about your intentions with your “old flame”, and you’re not really portraying your connection with him total honestly to your husband. He thinks you and this guy are pals, and you still have the hots for him big time after all these years, and what were you going to do if he made a move on you, say no? I don’t think you would, seeing that you are grieving the loss of his attention more than you are worrying about your marriage. Fate has a way of trying to save us from ourselves, and I feel strongly this is one of those times.Walk away and leave this where it belongs or more misfortune will follow, and many will get hurt.

Dear Miki,

I ended a 17 year relationship with my live-in boyfriend 2 years ago because of his temper and childish behaviour. He gave me an engagement ring, and I foolishly thought I had found my life partner. I was miserable because of his verbal abuse, but would have put up with it because of the love I thought we shared. My mother passed away, and 4 months later I ended up kicking him out. He moved to another city, but we kept in contact and he would come visit me every other weekend or so I realize this is not healthy for either of us, and we both need to get on with life. Part of me will always love him, and I know that I put up with his behaviour because I was emotionally damaged by a previous relationship .Do you see me meeting someone who will love me the way that I deserve to be loved .I’ve recently started a new job, and my hours make it difficult to meet potential boyfriends, or friends.

Enough of the abuse go round! You’ve put way too much effort into relationships that did not work. If you don’t want to make the same mistakes, learn to let go and stop trying to fix things until the bitter end. You shall find another partner but raise your expectations as to what you’ll accept in the future. When you send out that message you’ll weed out the bad matches before they happen. Dear Miki,

My future, concerning that “significant other” appears bleak to me. I’ve been alone for 15 years (after my husband’s death) and based on how the things are and have been, I can’t even imagine something significant and positive happening. However, I wish and I hope I am mistaken. Do you see anyone special coming into my life with whom I will share the rest of my life? I immigrated in Canada with my husband in 1981. We had two children and my husband died in a car accident in 1992. From that moment on, I dedicated my life to my children and securing our financial situation. I think I did pretty well on both fields. Now both of my children are grown up. Slowly, I’m realizing, I will soon be alone. More and more I wish I had a lover, or close friend of opposite sex in my life. Nothing is happening, I’m going places, doing things, and it seems men don’t notice me. I don’t particularly know how to “look for a man”. I’m not a flirt. I’m shy, but I also think it’s going to happen if it’s meant to be. Is it meant to be, is it going to happen?

Although your life was filled with tragedy and struggle at an early stage of your life, somehow you found a great deal of inner strength to pull yourself through it all and come out on top. You did a great job of parenting and bringing home the bacon to put on the table. You were very giving and unselfish, but you forgot to work on your own life. All you need to do now is find the same strength that got you through those lean years, and apply it to yourself. There are other romances waiting for you, you’re just not tapping into the right type of contacts. You need to also try some new options, and new places. Dear Miki,
I am 38, and I’m single and never been married, but
have been in serious relationships along the way. My last long-term
relationship was over 2.5 years ago. Since then, I’ve dated, with nothing
lasting longer than 2 months. My question is the age-old
relationship one – will I meet that special someone soon? I don’t have children
and am wondering if that will also be part of the equation for me. I’ve been
told that, that which I’ve wanted/desired the most, has eluded me the most
(marriage, family).I am a professional, with stable finances, have a home, a dog, car, good friends and am considered attractive. All my family live very far . It is getting frustrating for me at this point in my life not to have someone to share it with.

You need to stop looking for what you lost when your last relationship ended. I don’t sense that you are fully aware that you are subconsciously looking for the same feelings you had with your ex in another person, and when it doesn’t click the same way, you walk away. You are not lacking in the looks department, so attracting someone won’t be that difficult. Change your routines a bit as well, for you have same people same places and same faces around you, and you need some fresh connections. Your chance for happiness and family will not elude you much longer; don’t buy into that negative energy

I was just recently separated from my husband after giving him a million chances to stop drinking and running around with other women. I finally found the guts to pack up my self, my kids and some of my belongings and move out. Several family members were on my back to leave for years, and now that I finally have and my husband has come begging and crying to get his family back, they are actually telling me that maybe I should give him another chance. This is really confusing me and making me feel guilty for what I have done. My heart says keep moving on, but my emotions are playing on my conscience and making me doubt my common sense. What do you see, am I on the correct path?

You have taken a long time to come to your decision and it has not been made without pain and suffering. You waited patiently for changes, and asked many times for help and counselling to no avail. Your life and health was becoming affected and so was the emotional well-being of your children. Your family is feeling the same type of guilt and pressure from your husbands’ pleadings as you are feeling from them and their lack of understanding of the seriousness of his problems is confusing them as well. I cannot see you returning to your marriage and with or without the support of your family you will continue to move on to a new path. Dear Miki
Over a year ago, my boyfriend and I ended our relationship of 6 months. Actually, he broke up with me by just picking up and leaving for the cottage all summer. No calls. No text messages. No emails. Nothing. Of course I was shocked and saddened for this to end this way but it did. I finally moved on and am in a happy relationship of almost a year. From what I learned through mutual friends, he has moved on and is in a relationship too. Every so often I receive text messages from him. For example on my birthday, of course with good manners I did thank him for the birthday wish. I am slightly bothered though because during and even after our relationship ended, I always had the feeling he ignored me or denies he wants anything to do with me. The most recent text message he had sent me had a nickname that he had called me when we started dating. Additionally, he does ask me favours too. When I respond to him , he ends up not replying or denying that he did contact me. Should I believe he still has me in the back his mind or am I wasting my time to even respond the next time? Why does he contact me if he doesn’t want a response?

You need to do some self-examination and ask yourself why you even give this guy more than a minute of your time and risk losing the great relationship you have now by letting this guy who disappeared to the cottage with his new girlfriend contact you. Every text message he sends is bringing you closer to compromising your relationship. Unless you really want this game player back who doesn’t have you in his mind for anything good, how about you stop this losing game and do what he did, no calls, no email, no text messages. If not be prepared to continue feeling agitated, and suffer the consequences of your actions.

I’m 40 and have been with my husband for 19.5 years, but there’s an old boyfriend who I’ve stayed friends with for over 20 years who is also married. We both have families but I get a feeling that he’s still in love with me as he calls me at least once a week, and we see each other often. I’m not happy with my marriage but there is a child to think about. Are we supposed to be together like we were 20 years ago?

You seem to fill a need in each other lives, but I don’t really see anyone suggesting that you leave your spouses and get together. I do sense an affectionate bond, but you’ve had 20 years to make a move and no one has. Your marriage is failing and you need to decide if you can stay in it, or get out. Don’t let this friendship be the reason for a break up, or you could end up losing both.
